The Glories of You

Posted by:

Not known, because not looked for
But heard, half heard, in the stillness
Between two waves of the sea.
Quick now, here, now, always
A condition of complete simplicity
(costing no less than everything)”
T.S. Eliot, Four Quartets

It’s hard looking. It requires patience and a feeling that you just might be risking it all.

When I stumble upon these moments at the threshold, I often feel an irresistible urge to turn and run! I’ve done it too often to recall, but I’ve also seen the rewards that come with stepping into the unknown. I’ve seen through the thin veil of bad ideas, disappointing outcomes, and rock bottom failure. Sitting in silence in those very moments I’m offered the rarest of opportunities and possibilities.

My work has given me the opportunity to witness this unfolding on a daily basis. These are not feats beyond measure, and they are rarely greeted with fanfare. But they are the courageous steps of those who are willing to look.

Here’s to all of you for your efforts and courage.

  • To those who have looked, and those who someday will.
  • To those in the midst of their own fiery path of self-discovery, creativity and passion; May you find comfort in the innermost cave.
  • To those humbly seeking success in their fields of interest; May your hard work capture the hearts of your audience.
  • To those who have taken immeasurable risk; May you come to know it was the only way to reach your goal.
  • To those bombarded with the voices of critics and nonbelievers; May you find the courage to continue.
  • To those thinking of turning back; On the crest of despair are gifts you’ve not dreamed of before.

And to all of the above and then some, I offer Rumi’s unshakable knowing:

This is love: to fly toward a secret sky,
to cause a hundred veils to fall each moment.
First to let go of life. Finally, to take a step without feet.
